The estate has been dedicated to the production of Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto since 1886 and has remained in the Conterno family for four generations. The estate is perhaps best known for producing Barolo and Barbera d'Alba from the Ginestra Cru, one of the most important and historical vineyards in Barolo. Paolo Conterno's top wine, Barolo Ginestra Riserva DOCG, is produced from Nebbiolo vines that are around 35 years old. At the winery, the grapes are destemmed and crushed prior to a maceration period of 22 to 28 days. It is barrel-aged in traditional French oak casks for over four years prior to an additional year in bottle before it is released. The estate owns around 10 hectares (24 acres) of vineyard land with plots spread in the Langhe and Alba. Soils are primarily composed of calcareous-clayey loam with vines planted between 980 and 1150 feet (300 and 350m) above sea level. The vineyards face south and southeast on slopes with a gradient of up to 38-percent, giving them optimum sun exposure. Varieties in these vineyards include Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto as well as Chardonnay and Arneis.
