The distillery ceased operation and production in 2002, but a warehouse of barrelled rums continues to drip-feed the market. This limited supply has given Caroni rum a cult status with bottles reaching astronomical prices. Caroni was once one of the fifty-odd rum distilleries on the island with approximately 9000 employees producing rum from its own sugarcane fields. It is reported that the company began distilling as early as 1899 and by 1975, was owned entirely by the government. The heavy, dark, high alcohol rum was a reported favorite of the British Navy. In 2001, 49 percent of teh company holdings were sold to Angostura Bitters. The sugarcane industry plummeted in the early 2000s and the Caroni Distillery lost its local source of molasses. Closure was inevitable. Angostura remains the only distillery in the country operating with molasses imported from Guyana. In 2004, Italian distributor Luca Gargano acquired the bonded warehouse with hundreds of barrels of rum. The first Velier Caroni rums were released in 2005, the same year the distillery was demolished. These rums as some of the last produced in Trinidad are therefor collectors item that are highly soughtafter. Any interested collectors of Caroni are advised to purchase with caution as due to the popularity and demand of the label, fake bottles are prolific.
